Heritage

Heritage Heritage returning home after a day of charter L to R - Gleam, Freedom, Columbia, Nefertiti, Heritage, Intrepid, Weatherly, American Eagle & Onawa in Newport, R.I.

In 1970 Charlie Morgan single-handedly attempted to wrestle control of the Old Mug from the New York Yacht Club by designing, financing, building, making the sails and skippering his own America's Cup campaign in Heritage. He even sailed the boat on its own bottom from St. Petersburg, Florida to Newport, Rhode Island to compete in the trials. The attempt, however, proved to be too daunting a task as construction delays and a crash on launching day caused the forfeiture of some early races and in the end, the older redesigned Intrepid went on to defend the Cup.
