In 1905 Nathanael G Herreshoff designed and built 18 of the one-design New York 30’s. They were built at the rate of one a week at the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company who still managed to retain such exceptional construction standards that many NY30’s still survive today. She was the first one-design class to be built under the Universal Rule and attracted America’s finest skippers and crews.
Rigged as a gaff sloop they boasted enormous sail area for their 30’ waterline and proved to be fast, exciting and elegant.
The New York 30’s still compete today. There are four that race out of the New York Yacht Club and two regulars on the Mediterranean classic yacht circuit. Of the 18 New York 30s built, 12 are rumoured to be still sailing. |
